Can I stay with my child during the appointment?
Parents or guardians are welcome to stay with their child throughout the consultation and for most tests and procedures. If a specific clinical setting means you can’t be with your child, your consultant will explain this beforehand and ensure you’re kept informed. If there’s something your child would like to discuss with their consultant in private, you may be asked to leave the room for a few minutes and then come back. 16 to 18-year-olds have the right to attend the consultation on their own. We advise you to discuss this with the young person before attending.
We can also provide a chaperone, who is another healthcare professional who’s specially trained to be present during appointments and procedures. They’ll act as your child’s advocate and ensure they feel safe and comfortable at all times. Unfortunately, parents cannot act as chaperones – our clinical staff are trained to a high standard to act as your advocate.
