When is coughing up blood an emergency? 

Go to the nearest emergency department or call 999 if you:

  • cough up a large amount of blood

  • have sudden shortness of breath or chest pain

  • feel faint, dizzy, or weak

  • develop blue lips or fingers

  • notice rapid worsening of your symptoms
