Dr Scott Akker

Dr Scott Akker is a highly regarded Consultant Endocrinologist specialising in adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid and pituitary disorders. He has over two decades of experience as a Consultant at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London—one of the UK’s leading tertiary referral centres for endocrine care.

Dr Akker diagnoses and treats the full spectrum of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pituitary disorders, from common conditions such as thyroid nodules, overactive thyroid and primary hyperparathyroidism to rarer endocrine tumours such as pituitary adenomas, phaeochromocytoma and paragangliomas. He assesses and treats both benign and malignant nodules and tumours affecting these glands, as well as the hormone imbalances they can cause.

In the NHS, at Barts Hospital, he has a large clinical practice and runs specialist clinics for these disorders and for patients with genes predisposing them to endocrine disorders, such as phaeochromocytomas and paragangliomas, for which he is a recognised international expert. He is the lead for the European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumours (ENSAT) Centre of Excellence at Barts and the Pheo Para Alliance Centre of Excellence. He is a panel member on national and international consensus groups and is regularly invited to lecture at the key national and international endocrine meetings.

He graduated from Cambridge University in 1992, with first class honours, and went on to gain his MB BS, with distinction, from University of London (1995). He completed his specialist training in endocrinology and general medicine including time in research with a prestigious Wellcome Training Fellowship.

He is an honorary Clinical Reader in Endocrinology at Queen Mary, University of London and continues to lead research into paragangliomas and the associated genetic conditions. He is an author on over 70 peer-reviewed publications.
