What are blood and pathology tests?

Blood and pathology tests are a safe and effective way to detect, identify, diagnose, and treat disease. They can also give a more detailed picture of your health overall, as well as help you prepare for treatment, monitor illnesses and/or any medication you’re taking.

You might need blood and pathology tests to check for, or manage, conditions, such as:

  • iron deficiency anaemia

  • diabetes

  • cardiovascular disease

  • underactive or overactive thyroid

  • liver or kidney problems

  • tuberculosis

  • urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • specific allergies

  • psoriasis

  • inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

  • cancers

At Welbeck, blood and pathology tests are carried out in our state-of-the-art Imaging & Diagnostics centre.

Blood and pathology tests are delivered by our leading consultants and expert nurses. They will collect a small sample of blood, urine, tissue (biopsy), or stool (poo) from you, and send it to be analysed by a pathologist.

At Welbeck, we offer the latest in fast-track diagnostic testing, with hi-spec laboratory equipment. Once the samples are collected, our fast turnaround times mean you’ll get your results quickly, and a report will be compiled, which your consultant will then share and discuss with you.

At Welbeck, we offer a wide range of blood and pathology tests, including:

  • biochemistry tests – such as calcium, B12 and folate, cholesterol, albumin, cortisol, and iron levels

  • haematology tests – such as a full blood count (FBC), haemoglobin levels, peripheral blood film, and glandular fever screening

  • serology and virology tests – such as Epstein-Barr virus antibodies, HIV confirmation, and respiratory viral screen

  • allergy tests – such as eczema allergy profile, gluten, milk, and many other food and drink allergy tests

  • immunology tests – such as ovarian antibodies, coeliac screen, and adrenal cortex antibodies

  • sexually transmitted infection tests – such as syphilis antibodies, chlamydia trachomatis, sexual health urine screen, and herpes simplex virus tests

  • full genetics testing – such as familial breast and ovarian cancer, Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonism, and sickle cell anaemia analysis

Blood, urine and stool tests are very safe, with no side effects. If a small sample of tissue has been taken for analysis (biopsy), you might feel some discomfort in that specific area, but it should settle down shortly after the procedure.

Depending on the set of blood and pathology tests you require, you may need to fast beforehand. This means not eating or drinking anything except water for 8 to 12 hours, or cutting out specific foods for a time, before you arrive.

Specific fasting periods and foods to avoid can differ. When you make your appointment, you’ll be given all the details you need.

There’s no recovery time or aftercare needed with blood, stool, or urine tests. You’ll be able to return to normal activities right away.

If you’ve had a biopsy, you may notice some side effects, but symptoms should clear up soon after the procedure. These include:

  • pain or discomfort – felt in the area where you had the biopsy. This should only last a few days

  • scarring – especially after skin biopsies

  • mild bleeding – depending on where the biopsy was taken from

  • difficulty passing urine – this can happen immediately after a prostate biopsy. Your doctor will make sure you can urinate before you go home

    Frequently asked questions

Some of the most common pathology tests include a full blood count (FBC), blood glucose (sugar) tests, lipid profiles, which include measuring cholesterol levels, and a renal panel, such as checking electrolyte, urea, calcium, and creatinine levels.

You may feel a slight prick when the blood sample is taken from your arm, and there may be a small bruise in the area for a few days, but a blood test does not cause lasting pain.

A stool (poo) sample can show if there are bacteria, viruses or parasites in your stool, all of which can make you ill. It’s usually requested by a doctor if you're having digestive issues.

Some urine tests require dietary restriction, which can include food and drink like avocados, bananas, pineapples, caffeine, plums, walnuts, tea, and tomatoes. Follow the instructions you’re given when you book your appointment. These can vary depending on the type of urine test you need.
