Gut Microbiome Testing

A gut microbiome test assesses the balance of bacteria in your digestive system, which plays a vital role in overall wellbeing and nutrient absorption.

What is gut microbiome testing?

The human gut microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms, with over 90% being bacteria. These bacteria play a key role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immunity support. They help break down complex carbohydrates and produce essential vitamins and compounds that protect against harmful pathogens and inflammation.

A balanced microbiome is crucial for good health, as no single bacterial species should dominate. Imbalances in the gut microbiome are linked to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, and diabetes. Ongoing research continues to highlight the gut microbiome’s vital role in overall health and disease prevention.

You may need a gut microbiome test if you are experiencing ongoing digestive issues, unexplained symptoms or want a deeper understanding of your overall health. The test can help to:

  • identify imbalances in gut bacteria linked to bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain

  • detect factors contributing to conditions like IBS, IBD, obesity, or diabetes

  • provide insights into nutrient absorption and immune function

  • guide personalised diet and lifestyle recommendations to improve gut health

At Welbeck, gut microbiome testing is performed by our experienced gastroenterologists in our state-of-the-art Digestive Health centre.

More information

A gut microbiome test requires a sample of stool to be collected, which is then sent to a lab and analysed.

At a consultation, your gastroenterologist you’ll be provide you with a stool collection kit and talk you through what to do. You use the kit in the comfort of your own home, and post the sample to our laboratory.

The kit comes with simple instructions on how to collect your stool sample, and the packaging and shipping label are included so you can easily send it to our laboratory. Be sure to complete and attach the enclosed label to the sample tube before posting. The process is quick, straightforward, and completely non-invasive.

In the lab, analysis identifies all bacteria in the sample. A specialised bioinformatics platform then interprets the results and generates a detailed report. This report compares your microbiome to the general population and highlights key health metrics, including imbalances in beneficial bacteria (such as probiotics) or harmful bacteria (such as pathogens or species linked to inflammation). These insights help your consultant to recommend the most appropriate steps to restore balance and support your gut health, and also to develop a treatment plan if necessary.

Gut microbiome testing is safe, as it only requires providing a stool sample. Since the test is non-invasive, there are no physical risks or side effects.

No special preparation is needed for the test. You should continue taking your usual medications and supplements so their effects on your microbiome can be accurately assessed – unless your consultant advises otherwise.

Avoid starting new supplements such as fibre or probiotics or making major changes to your diet just before the test unless recommended by your consultant.

Since antibiotics can significantly affect the gut microbiome, the test should not be done immediately after finishing a course, unless your consultant specially requests it.

It’s also best to wait at least a week after a colonoscopy or similar procedure before testing. If you are unsure, consult your consultant for guidance.
