Hyaluronic Acid Injections (Viscosupplementation)
Hyaluronic acid injections are used to relieve joint pain, most often in the knee. They can help improve movement and reduce discomfort caused by arthritis when other treatments have not worked well enough.
What is hyaluronic acid injection?
Hyaluronic acid injections, also known as viscosupplementation, are a non-surgical treatment used to treat joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a common condition in which the cartilage in a joint wears out, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in healthy joint fluid. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, helping your joints move smoothly. In osteoarthritis, the quality and quantity of this fluid are reduced, which can make movement painful and stiff.
Viscosupplementation involves injecting a gel-like form of hyaluronic acid directly into the joint. This helps to restore some of the joint’s natural lubrication, which may reduce pain and improve mobility.
Your consultant may recommend this treatment if you have symptoms linked to conditions such as hip or knee arthritis, especially if simple treatments like pain relief, physiotherapy, or steroid injections have not provided enough relief.
At Welbeck, this treatment is delivered by orthopaedic specialists in a controlled clinical setting. It’s often performed using precise imaging techniques (ultrasound) to ensure accuracy and safety, helping you return to your daily activities with greater comfort.
More information
Hyaluronic acid injections are carried out in just a few minutes, and you can go home the same day.
In many cases, your consultant will perform the injection using ultrasound guidance. This allows them to see the joint in real time and place the injection accurately.
The procedure typically involves the following steps:
You’ll be positioned comfortably so the joint can be accessed easily.
The skin is cleaned thoroughly to reduce the risk of infection.
A local anaesthetic may be used to numb the area.
A fine needle is inserted into the joint space, often guided by ultrasound.
The hyaluronic acid solution is injected into the joint.
A small dressing may be applied afterwards.
The procedure usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes. Most people tolerate it well, and sedation or general anaesthesia is not required.
Depending on the product used, you may have a single injection or a course of injections over several weeks. Your consultant will explain what’s most suitable for you.
Hyaluronic acid injections are considered safe, and serious complications are uncommon. However, as with any medical procedure, there are some risks to be aware of.
These include:
temporary pain or swelling at the injection site
stiffness or a feeling of pressure in the joint
mild inflammation or warmth around the joint
bruising at the injection site
infection (rare)
allergic reaction (very rare)
Some people experience a short-term increase in pain after the injection, sometimes called a ‘flare’. This usually settles within a few days.
Your consultant will explain these risks clearly and answer any questions you have before your treatment. They’ll also take steps to minimise risks, including using sterile techniques and imaging guidance where appropriate.
Preparing for viscosupplementation is usually simple, and most people do not need to make major changes before their appointment.
Before your procedure:
you can usually eat and drink as normal
continue taking most medications unless advised otherwise
let your consultant know if you take blood-thinning medication
inform your consultant if you have any allergies or infections
wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to the joint
If you’re feeling unwell, particularly with a skin infection near the joint, your procedure may need to be postponed.
Your consultant will give you clear, personalised instructions during your consultation to make sure you feel prepared.
Recovery after hyaluronic acid injections is usually quick, and most people return to normal daily activities within a short time.
Straight after the procedure, you may notice:
mild discomfort or swelling in the joint
a feeling of fullness or pressure
slight stiffness
These symptoms are usually temporary and settle within a few days.
To support your recovery:
rest the joint for 24 to 48 hours after the injection
avoid strenuous activity or high-impact exercise for a few days
use simple pain relief, such as paracetamol, if needed
apply an ice pack to reduce swelling, if advised
Most people can walk and carry out light activities on the same day, but it’s best to avoid heavy exercise until your consultant says it’s safe.
You can usually drive yourself home after the procedure, although you may prefer to arrange transport if your joint feels uncomfortable.
Follow-up care is an important part of your treatment. Your consultant may arrange a review appointment to assess how well the injection has worked and to discuss next steps. In some cases, physiotherapy may be recommended to help improve strength and movement in the joint.
Pain relief from hyaluronic acid injections does not happen immediately. It can take several weeks to notice improvement, but the benefits may last for several months in some patients.

Frequently asked questions
The effects of hyaluronic acid injections vary from person to person. Some people notice relief for several months, while others may have shorter or longer benefit. If the treatment works well, your consultant may recommend repeating it in the future.
This treatment is usually recommended for people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. It may be an option if other treatments have not provided enough relief, or if you want to delay or avoid surgery.
These injections work in different ways. Steroid injections reduce inflammation quickly, while hyaluronic acid aims to improve joint lubrication over time. Your consultant will advise which option, or combination, is most suitable based on your symptoms.
In some cases, these injections may help manage symptoms and improve joint function, which can delay the need for surgery. However, they do not reverse arthritis or repair joint damage. Your consultant will guide you on the best long-term treatment plan.
