SleepImage

SleepImage is a simple, at-home sleep test that helps assess sleep quality and identify breathing-related sleep disorders. Using a small finger sensor worn over several nights, it provides a detailed picture of how you sleep, without the need for a hospital stay.

What is SleepImage?

SleepImage is a diagnostic sleep test designed to assess how well you sleep and whether there are signs of disrupted or abnormal breathing during your sleep. The test is carried out at home, over several nights, using a small, wearable finger sensor that records key signals while you sleep in your own bed. The data is shared remotely with the clinical team using a mobile app, and the device doesn’t need to be returned after the test, making it one of the most convenient sleep tests available.

The device measures oxygen levels, heart rate and variability, breathing patterns and movement throughout the night. These signals allow clinicians to assess sleep quality, sleep stability, and how often your sleep is disrupted. By analysing data over several nights, SleepImage provides a clearer and more reliable picture of your usual sleep than a single-night test.

SleepImage is suitable for adults who struggle with poor-quality sleep. This may include symptoms such as snoring, moving a lot during sleep, feeling tired during the day, or waking unrefreshed or with morning headaches. It’s also helpful for those already using treatment to help with sleep, such as CPAP, who need follow-up monitoring.

At Welbeck, we’re proud to be the first private practice in the UK to offer SleepImage testing through our state-of-the-art Lung Health centre. Our sleep specialists are experts in interpreting SleepImage data and use it to provide clear guidance and personalised next steps, helping you move towards better sleep, improved daytime energy, and long-term wellbeing.

More information

SleepImage testing is simple and easy to complete at home. Before the test, you’ll attend a short appointment with one of our team, who’ll explain how it works and help you set up the small finger sensor and mobile app. This usually takes around 15 minutes. Once set up, the test is fully remote, and you don’t need to return the sensor when testing is complete.

During the test, you’ll wear the sensor overnight in your own bed for several nights, following your usual routine. While you sleep, the sensor records information such as oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing patterns, and movement, with data shared securely with your clinical team. Your consultant will let you know how many nights you should wear the device.

After the final night, your clinician will review the results alongside your symptoms and prepare a report, usually within 24 hours. They’ll then arrange a follow-up call or appointment to explain the findings clearly and talk through the most appropriate next steps with you.

SleepImage is very safe, with no known medical risks associated with the test.

Some people may notice mild awareness of the sensor on the finger, or very minor skin irritation, which usually settles quickly. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, you can remove the device and let your team know.

There’s no special preparation required for SleepImage testing other than to keep your mobile phone charged and nearby during the test. You can eat and drink as normal, take your usual medications, and follow your normal bedtime routine.

During testing, you can continue with your usual daily activities. Once testing is complete, your consultant will arrange a follow-up call or appointment to explain your results and discuss the recommended next steps.

SleepImage testing costs £670 for 3 nights. Please contact our Lung Health centre for more detailed pricing information.

Frequently asked questions

Test data is typically recorded for 3 nights to give an accurate picture of your sleep. In some cases, your consultant may recommend wearing the device for a different number of nights, depending on your symptoms and what information is needed. They’ll let you know what’s most appropriate for you when you arrange the test.

It’s absolutely fine to get out of bed during the test. The device is designed to allow normal movement, and short periods out of bed won’t affect the test results, especially as data is collected over several nights.

To carry out the test, you’ll need a smartphone that can run the SleepImage app. Most smartphones are suitable for this, but our team will check that your phone is compatible before arranging the test and will help set everything up for you during your appointment.

SleepImage, TOSCA, NOX T3, and Sunrise are different tests designed to answer different questions about sleep and breathing. SleepImage is used for assessing overall sleep quality and breathing patterns over several nights, but it doesn’t measure carbon dioxide levels or provide detailed information about airflow and breathing effort. A TOSCA study is needed if hypoventilation or high carbon dioxide is suspected, while a NOX T3 study is used to assess sleep apnoea and breathing events in more detail. The Sunrise test focuses on jaw movement to help diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate test, or combination of tests, based on your symptoms, medical history, and the information needed to guide your care.
