Frequently asked questions

Dr Lynch offers comprehensive mole checks using dermoscopy and clinical examination to assess whether a mole shows any concerning features. If a mole needs to be removed, he can carry out an excisional biopsy or skin surgery, often at the same visit or shortly after. As lead clinician for the melanoma multidisciplinary team at St John's Institute of Dermatology, he has extensive experience in diagnosing and managing all types of skin cancer including melanoma.

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialised technique for removing skin cancer layer by layer, with each layer examined under the microscope during the procedure to ensure complete removal with minimal damage to surrounding healthy skin. Dr Lynch is a trained Mohs surgeon at St John's Institute of Dermatology and offers this procedure for skin cancers in sensitive locations such as the face. It provides the highest cure rate of any skin cancer treatment while preserving as much normal tissue as possible.

Dr Lynch lists rosacea among his specialist conditions and can offer treatments beyond standard topical creams, including laser and intense pulsed light therapy to reduce persistent redness and visible blood vessels. He will carry out a thorough assessment to determine the subtype and severity of your rosacea and develop a tailored treatment plan. His research background in dermatology at King's College London means his approach is informed by the latest clinical evidence.

Dr Lynch treats a range of hair loss conditions, including alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, and scarring alopecias. He will carry out a clinical examination and may use dermoscopy or scalp biopsy to reach a precise diagnosis before recommending treatment options, which can include medical therapy, injections, or onward referral for transplantation where appropriate. Early diagnosis is important in hair loss, so specialist assessment is recommended if you notice thinning, patching, or increased shedding.

Yes, keloid and hypertrophic scars are among Dr Lynch's listed conditions, and he offers scar treatment and revision using a combination of approaches that may include steroid injections, laser therapy, and surgical revision depending on the scar's size, location, and history. He will assess whether the scar is still active or stable and recommend the most effective treatment plan. His dual training in dermatology and surgery (he holds MRCS and FRCP) gives him a comprehensive perspective on scar management.
