What are Private PRP injections for hair loss?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections, also called PRP therapy, are an effective non-surgical treatment for thinning hair and hair loss.

Platelets are one of the primary components of blood and play an important role in the promotion of cell growth and regeneration. As the name suggests, the platelets in platelet-rich plasma are around 5 times more concentrated than in regular blood.

PRP injections are particularly useful in the treatment of hair loss, as they can help improve blood circulation and accelerate healing in the scalp tissue to encourage the growth of existing hair follicles, resulting in fuller, healthier hair.

At our Skin Health centre, our expert dermatologists offer safe and effective PRP injections to men and women experiencing hair thinning, hair loss, pattern baldness or any type of alopecia. PRP therapy may also help aid the stimulation of hair growth after a hair transplant.

PRP injections are not an appropriate treatment for patients with complete baldness, as hair follicles must be present for PRP to be effective.

More information

PRP injections for hair loss are performed as an outpatient procedure, and you’ll be able to go home straight after your treatment.

Your consultant may use a numbing cream or local anaesthetic on the area being treated to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during the procedure. The treatment normally takes around 30 minutes.

PRP for hair loss injections consists of three stages:

  • stage 1 – your consultant dermatologist will take a small sample of blood from either the crook of your arm or the back of your hand

  • stage 2 –  the blood is placed into a machine called a centrifuge, which spins at high speeds to help separate the plasma from the other blood components

  • stage 3 – the highly concentrated PRP is drawn up into a syringe before being injected into multiple sites across the scalp in the areas affected by hair loss

Depending on the severity of your hair loss, your treatment plan will likely consist of between 3 and 6 sessions, approximately 1 month apart. Each appointment will be around 30 minutes.

PRP injections for hair loss is a generally safe procedure, but as with any medical procedure, there is a small risk of side effects or complications. Your dermatologist will explain all the possible risks and complications of your procedure before your treatment and answer any questions you may have.

Potential complications of PRP injections include:

  • pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites

  • bruising and bleeding at the injection sites or where the blood was taken from your arm

  • allergic reaction – allergic reaction to the PRP is rare, as it’s your own blood, but rarely, reactions to the local anaesthetic may occur

  • infection

  • damage to the nerves, blood vessels, or surrounding tissues

  • granulomas – a rare complication where hard lumps develop due to prolonged inflammation

Before your treatment, tell your consultant about any medical conditions or allergies you have, and any medications you take regularly.

Your consultant will give you instructions on how to prepare for your PRP injections.

They may tell you to:

  • stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, for a few days before your surgery. This is to reduce the risk of bleeding during and after your procedure.

  • avoid drinking alcohol for at least 2 to 3 days before your treatment

  • don’t engage in strenuous exercise for 24 hours before and after your treatment

  • don’t apply any harsh chemicals to your hair or scalp for at least a week before your procedure

  • shower and wash your hair with your usual shampoo on the morning of your treatment. Don’t apply gels, hairsprays or other styling products to your hair

There is minimal recovery time after a PRP session, so you can return to your daily routine right away.

Follow your consultant’s advice on what to do during your recovery and get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Post-treatment instructions may include:

  • don’t wash your hair or use any hair products for at least 24 hours after your treatment

  • keep your scalp clean

  • avoid smoking and alcohol for a few days, as they can delay healing

  • avoid strenuous activity or vigorous exercise for 12 to 48 hours

  • avoid heat (such as steam rooms or saunas) and sun exposure
