About Matthew Johnson

Dr. Matt W. Johnson has worked as a consultant at Luton and Dunstable NHS Foundation Trust University Hospital for nearly 15 years, providing private specialist gastroenterology support and advice to patients in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and North London. Dual-qualified as both a General Medical Physician and Gastroenterologist, Dr. Johnson trained through the prestigious Guy’s, King’s, and St. Thomas’ Hospital rotations, completing an MD in research at St. Mark’s Hospital.

Dr. Johnson specialises in managing a wide range of general gastroenterological issues, including constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, food allergies and intolerances, acid reflux, and indigestion (dyspepsia). Additionally, he has a strong research interest in coeliac disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Capsule Endoscopy, oesophageal dysmotility (e.g., spasm), and non-invasive bowel investigations.

In leadership roles, Dr. Johnson has served as the Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology at both the Luton & Dunstable NHS Foundation Trust and the private Spire Harpenden Hospital. As a core member of the local upper gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer multidisciplinary teams, he plays a vital role in providing comprehensive, collaborative care. His private practice closely mirrors his NHS service, focusing on delivering high-quality care with an open and approachable manner.

Unlike most general gastroenterologists, Dr. Johnson offers advanced procedures such as capsule enteroscopy, oesophageal manometry studies, and weight loss balloon placements. Fully competent in a range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, he has performed a significant number of these with excellent outcomes. With a high caecal completion rate and strong comfort scores, Dr. Johnson openly shares performance results on the National Endoscopy Database, reflecting a commitment to transparency and excellence in care.

Yes. You can arrange an appointment for a family member, or someone you care for, just let us know when you get in touch. We’ll need their details and consent to complete the booking, unless you're their legal guardian or have power of attorney.
