About Richard Toshner
Dr Richard Toshner qualified from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 2008. He gained experience in respiratory medicine at the internationally renowned Interstitial lung disease (ILD) unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He then went on to complete a PhD at Imperial College London and the Royal Brompton Hospital. His doctoral research focused on airway epithelial cells and macrophages in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
He trained in respiratory and general internal medicine in the North Central East London Deanery, with experience in hospitals including St Bartholomews’ Hospital and University College London Hospital. As well as working as a respiratory specialist looking after inpatients during the COVID19 pandemic, he was also involved in developing and then serving as medical clinical lead for the rapidly developed long covid multidisciplinary team at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
Following completion of his training he took up a dual post specialising in Interstitial Lung Disease at St Bartholomew’s hospital and general respiratory medicine as well as interstitial lung disease at Whipps Cross Hospital. At St Bartholomew he leads the interstitial lung disease multi disciplinary team, as well as providing cross specialty expertise in joint medical clinics with rheumatology, cardiology and palliative care colleagues. The joint respiratory and cardiac sarcoid service at St Bartholomew’s is internationally recognised by the World Association of Sarcoid and Granulomatous Disorders (WASOG).
He regularly performs diagnostic procedures including bronchoscopy and pleural interventions, in the investigation and management of a wide range of common respiratory conditions. Dr Toshner is actively involved in clinical research into interstitial lung diseases, as well as being committed to medical education - at St Bartholomew’s hospital he chairs the departmental educational meetings, in addition to providing educational supervision to medial trainees at Whipps Cross Hospital.
Dr Toshner is particularly committed to service development, with a focus on developing services that support and address patient’s needs as they go on their journey through the healthcare system.
