Biography

Miss Shamim Umarji is a highly skilled Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises exclusively in hand and wrist surgery.

She qualified from Oxford University in 1996 and trained at Cambridge University, Bristol and the St George’s registrar program in London. She undertook super-specialist hand/wrist fellowships at the Windsor Hand Clinic under David Evans and at the premier specialist plastics hand unit in Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

She was appointed as Consultant at St George’s Hospital, one of Europe’s leading teaching hospitals and a major trauma centre, in 2009. At St George’s, Miss Umarji is the Lead Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist surgeon and was Clinical Director for Trauma & Orthopaedics, and now Clinical Director for Surgery.

Miss Umarji will always endeavour to exhaust all non-interventional / non-operative treatments before embarking on surgery. She has a special research interest in Dupuytren’s disease and at her NHS base is the Principle Investigator for a national multi-centre trial exploring non-operative treatment options and new techniques (eg collagenase injections, Needle Fasciotomy ). She also has research interests in the use of Virtual Reality in wide-awake surgery and arthritis of the hand.

Working in a Major Trauma Centre brings inevitable experience around devastating hand / wrist traumas, complex as well as simple wrist / hand / scaphoid fractures and their complications. Miss Umarji is happy to provide expert second opinions on complex hand / wrist problems as well as treating the more straightforward conditions such as carpal tunnel decompression, arthritis (osteo- and rheumatoid), tendon pathologies etc.

As a former Oxford Double Blue, she has nationally represented at rugby and cricket and she understands the importance of getting patients back to their sporting goals. Many of her patients are high level athletes, rowers, tennis and rugby players. She is naturally interested in sports injuries (eg scapholunate ligament / TFCC injuries / arm pump etc).

Miss Umarji lives in Wimbledon and has children who attend local schools. She embraces life in SW19 and is a rugby coach for the Under 13 boys at Wimbledon Rugby Club as well as umpiring/ coaching duties at the Wimbledon Cricket Club. She loves sport especially rugby, cricket and tennis and is a player member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
