Mr Jahangir Ahmed
Consultant ENT Surgeon
About Jahangir Ahmed
Mr Jahangir (Jay) Ahmed is a leading Consultant ENT, Head & Neck Cancer and Sleep Surgeon practising at Barts Health NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Mr Ahmed is widely recognised as one of the UK's foremost specialists in the surgical treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), particularly in patients who have not benefited from, or cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. He offers the complete spectrum of modern sleep surgery, from minimally invasive nasal and palate procedures through to advanced multilevel airway reconstruction, transoral robotic surgery (TORS), and hypoglossal nerve stimulation implantation.
He has pioneered hypoglossal nerve stimulation at Barts Health as part of a specialist multidisciplinary sleep surgery programme, with extensive experience in both the Inspire and Genio systems. He is currently the highest-volume Genio implanter in the UK and one of the highest-volume TORS surgeons in the country, having performed over 300 robotic procedures for both airway obstruction and head and neck cancer.
Central to his approach is drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), an advanced airway investigation performed under sedation that allows precise identification of the anatomical sites responsible for airway collapse. This enables highly personalised, targeted treatment planning, and positions Mr Ahmed uniquely to address the true structural causes of snoring and sleep apnoea.
He frequently manages complex tertiary referral patients who have not improved with conventional treatments, including CPAP or prior surgery.
His specialist areas include:
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea surgery
CPAP intolerance and advanced alternative treatment pathways
Inspire and Genio hypoglossal nerve stimulation implants
Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE)
Transoral robotic surgery (TORS)
Nasal obstruction and sinus surgery including septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and advanced endoscopic sinus surgery
Tongue base, palate, and epiglottic surgery for upper airway obstruction
Minimally invasive sleep surgery, including Celon radiofrequency treatment, palate stiffening, and uvular/palatal reduction
Voice, swallowing, and airway disorders, including chronic cough, throat clearing, and laryngopharyngeal irritation syndromes
Thyroid and parathyroid surgery
Benign and malignant head and neck tumours with a focus on function preservation
Advanced minimally invasive ENT, using cutting edge technology such as laser, coblation, robotic, and advanced endoscopic techniques
Alongside his sleep surgery practice, Mr Ahmed maintains a major tertiary referral service in thyroid and head and neck cancer surgery. He is a core member of the Barts Health Thyroid MDT, one of the largest thyroid cancer groups in the UK, performing high volumes of thyroid surgery with exceptionally low complication rates. He also works within a specialist multidisciplinary head and neck cancer team able to resect and reconstruct the full spectrum of head and neck cancers, with a strong emphasis on preservation of speech, swallowing, airway function, appearance, nerve function and long-term quality of life.
Mr Ahmed was educated at the University of Cambridge, reading at King's College, where he was awarded the Harmer Prize for Medicine and graduated with an MA in Experimental Psychology. He completed his clinical training at Imperial College London, graduating with Distinction and the Gold Medal in Pathology.
His higher surgical training was undertaken at London's leading ENT centres, including the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St Bartholomew's, The Royal London, and Charing Cross, during which time he held prestigious academic fellowships from the Wellcome Trust, Barts and The London Charity, and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. These culminated in a PhD from the Barts Cancer Institute in genetic engineering for immunity-based cancer treatment.
Mr Ahmed holds a PGCert in Medical Education and serves as Education Co-Lead at Barts Health, coordinating training programmes for North Thames higher surgical trainees. He is also faculty on several London-based ENT surgical training courses, and his continued involvement in research and surgical innovation ensures patients benefit from the most current, evidence-based treatment pathways.
His practice is built on a deeply held philosophy: restoring breathing, improving sleep, preserving voice and swallowing, and delivering advanced cancer care without compromising function or quality of life.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, but only for certain services. Some consultations, assessments, and treatments can be booked directly, while others require a GP or specialist referral. Please check the relevant service page for guidance, and contact the centre if you’re unsure.
We aim to offer appointments as quickly as possible, and many services have same-day or next-day availability. Waiting times vary depending on the appointment type, specialty, and consultant availability, but our team will always offer the earliest suitable appointment.
Yes. You can arrange an appointment for a family member, or someone you care for, just let us know when you get in touch. We’ll need their details and consent to complete the booking, unless you're their legal guardian or have power of attorney.
Your first consultation includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors, followed by a thorough examination. It’s helpful if you can bring the results of any previous investigations with you, as well as a list of your current medications. Come with a comfortably full bladder so you can provide a urine sample if requested.
