Mr Jahangir Ahmed
Consultant ENT Surgeon
About Jahangir Ahmed
Mr Jahangir (Jay) Ahmed is a leading Consultant ENT, Head & Neck and Sleep Surgeon specialising in snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), advanced airway surgery, hypoglossal nerve stimulation implants, robotic surgery, thyroid surgery, and head and neck cancer surgery. He practises at Barts Health NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and is the current Clinical Lead for ENT at Barts Health.
Mr Ahmed is widely recognised for his expertise in the treatment of complex snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, particularly in patients who struggle with or cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. He is one of a small number of surgeons in the UK able to offer the complete spectrum of modern surgical sleep apnoea treatments, ranging from minimally invasive nasal and palate procedures through to advanced multilevel airway reconstruction, transoral robotic surgery (TORS), and hypoglossal nerve stimulation implantation.
He has pioneered hypoglossal nerve stimulation technology at Barts Health as part of a specialist multidisciplinary sleep surgery programme and has extensive experience with both Inspire and Genio hypoglossal nerve stimulation systems. He is currently the highest-volume Genio implanter in the UK.
A central part of Mr Ahmed’s approach is detailed anatomical assessment of the upper airway using drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), an advanced dynamic airway investigation performed under sedation. DISE allows precise identification of the anatomical sites responsible for airway collapse during sleep, enabling highly personalised and targeted treatment planning.
Mr Ahmed’s expertise in airway anatomy and reconstructive ENT surgery places him in a unique position to diagnose and treat the true structural causes of snoring and sleep apnoea. Mr Ahmed frequently manages complex tertiary referral patients with persistent obstructive sleep apnoea who have not achieved adequate improvement with conventional treatment pathways, including CPAP therapy or indeed previous surgery.
His specialist areas include:
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea surgery
CPAP intolerance and advanced CPAP-alternative treatment pathways
Inspire and Genio hypoglossal nerve stimulation implants
Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE)
Transoral robotic surgery (TORS)
Nasal obstruction and sinus surgery, including septoplasty, turbinate reduction and advanced endoscopic sinus surgery
Tongue base, palate, and epiglottic surgery for upper airway obstruction
Minimally invasive sleep surgery techniques, including Celon radiofrequency treatment of the turbinates, palate stiffening, and uvular/palatal reduction procedures
Voice, swallow, and airway disorders, including chronic cough, throat clearing, and laryngopharyngeal irritation syndromes
Thyroid and parathyroid surgery
Benign and malignant head and neck tumours with a focus on function preservation
Advanced minimally invasive ENT surgery, including laser, coblation, robotic, and endoscopic techniques
Mr Ahmed leads a specialist airway and sleep surgery team at Barts Health dedicated to the management of sleep-disordered breathing, ranging from socially disruptive snoring through to severe obstructive sleep apnoea. His team has helped a substantial proportion of appropriately selected CPAP-dependent patients successfully move away from long-term CPAP therapy following advanced airway surgery.
He is also one of the highest-volume transoral robotic surgeons in the UK, having performed more than 300 transoral robotic surgery (TORS) procedures using Da Vinci robotic systems for both obstructive airway conditions and head and neck tumours.
Alongside his airway and sleep surgery practice, Mr Ahmed maintains a major tertiary referral practice in thyroid and head and neck cancer surgery. He is one of the core thyroid surgeons within the Barts Health Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), one of the largest thyroid cancer groups in the UK. He performs a high volume of thyroid surgery with exceptionally low complication rates and is among the few surgeons designated to undertake selective neck dissections in advanced thyroid cancer patients, with a strong emphasis on preserving nerve function, swallowing, voice, and long-term neck function.
Mr Ahmed was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he studied at King’s College, Cambridge, achieving the Harmer Prize for Medicine and obtaining an MA in Experimental Psychology. He completed his clinical training at Imperial College London, graduating with the Gold Medal in Pathology.
His higher surgical training was undertaken at some of London’s leading ENT centres, including the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, and Charing Cross Hospital.
During this time, he was awarded prestigious academic fellowships from the Wellcome Trust, Barts and The London Charity, and the Royal College of Surgeons. These culminated in a PhD from the Barts Cancer Institute in genetic engineering for immunity-based cancer treatment.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Ahmed is a dedicated educator and academic. He holds a PGCert in Medical Education and serves as Education Co-Lead at Barts Health, helping coordinate and deliver training programmes for North Thames higher surgical trainees and junior doctors. He is also faculty on several London-based ENT instructional and surgical training courses.
His ongoing involvement in research, academia, and surgical innovation ensures that patients have access to modern evidence-based treatment pathways and state-of-the-art technology.
Mr Ahmed has developed a reputation for combining advanced tertiary-level expertise with highly personalised patient care. He is committed to guiding patients cleanly through every stage of their treatment journey, with a strong focus on restoring breathing, improving sleep quality, preserving function, and enhancing long-term quality of life.
Mr Ahmed’s philosophy is centred on restoring breathing, improving sleep, preserving speech and swallowing, and delivering advanced cancer care without compromising long-term function or quality of life.

We aim to offer appointments as quickly as possible, and many services have same-day or next-day availability. Waiting times vary depending on the appointment type, specialty, and consultant availability, but our team will always offer the earliest suitable appointment.
Yes. You can arrange an appointment for a family member, or someone you care for, just let us know when you get in touch. We’ll need their details and consent to complete the booking, unless you're their legal guardian or have power of attorney.
Your first consultation includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors, followed by a thorough examination. It’s helpful if you can bring the results of any previous investigations with you, as well as a list of your current medications. Come with a comfortably full bladder so you can provide a urine sample if requested.
