Mr Michalis Varvanas

Mr Michalis Varnavas is a Consultant Urologist at Whittington Hospital in London, where he has worked as a Consultant since 2022. He sees patients with a wide range of urological problems, with particular interests in prostate conditions, urinary tract stones, and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

Mr Varnavas studied Medicine at Leicester Warwick Medical School, graduating in 2009. He undertook his basic surgical training in the East of England Deanery before advancing to higher urology training in the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery, gaining experience across a range of general and specialist urological services. He subsequently undertook a senior clinical fellowship in robotic renal surgery at the Royal Free Hospital before returning to the Whittington as a Consultant Urologist.

Mr Varnavas treats patients with male urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate and offers treatment for kidney and urinary tract stones. He has experience in ureteroscopy and day-case stone surgery. He has an interest in the investigation of patients with blood in the urine and the diagnosis and management of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and is the lead clinician at the Whittington for the management of this condition. He also sees patients with urinary tract infections and other common urological symptoms, including conditions affecting the penis and scrotum, and urological emergencies.

He has published and presented research in prostate surgery, bladder cancer, and endourology. He is also the local Clinical Governance Lead and is actively involved in the teaching and training of medical students and junior doctors at the Whittington.

Mr Varnavas has experience in outpatient and day-case urological procedures, allowing many investigations and treatments to be carried out without the need for an overnight hospital stay. He takes a patient-centred approach, listening to patients' concerns and explaining their diagnosis and treatment options clearly. He aims to provide practical advice and involve patients in decisions about their care, while ensuring they feel informed and supported throughout their treatment.
