About Dennis Chan

Professor Dennis Chan at Welbeck is an academic neurologist and an international authority on the early detection of Alzheimer's disease. He leads a research team based at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience while his clinical work is based at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust where he runs a specialist memory clinic. His primary interest is the detection of preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and he has pioneered the use of next generation digital technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality and app-based tests. His research work encompasses testing of people at risk of developing dementia, aiming not only to improve early diagnosis but also to identify approaches that protect brain function and reduce risk of future dementia.

Professor Dennis Chan remains clinically active, with NHS work focusing mainly on the diagnosis and treatment of people with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease using gold standard tests including high resolution MRI, PET scans and lumbar punctures with high sensitivity and specificity for Alzheimer's disease. He also undertakes general neurology work covering other diseases such as Parkinson's disease, headaches and epilepsy though his main expertise is in memory disorders.

Professor Dennis Chan receives grant funding from the Wellcome Trust, Alzheimer’s Research UK, the National Institute for Health Research and the UK Dementia Research Institute.

“Following a visit to my GP I was referred to Professor Chan. I very quickly got an appointment with Professor Chan and after taking a few minutes to explain to him what the problem was he very quickly gave me an explanation and diagnosis. It was so nice for someone to eventually know exactly what I was talking about. Professor Chan prescribed some medication which worked almost straight away and I have been nearly symptom free ever since. Fantastic result!!” K.N.

“I would like to provide some feedback on my experience with Doctor Dennis Chan. I first met him in early 2017. I found him a very knowledgeable and pleasant man. It was obvious to me that he is an experienced doctor, in his field. He is an honest man who explained what he had found out, in a straight forward and easy to understand, way. I have now seen him again. this time in November/December 2019 and in my opinion he has not changed at all. My family were also, very impressed with him and his attitude.” D.M.

“To me it was very important to find an approachable medical person who I could relax with and who would listen to me - I found both in Professor Chan. From my first and subsequent visits, even the smallest concerns I raised were actively listened to and offers of solutions or next steps were given in a manner I could understand. I sincerely feel Professor Chan really cares about my personal health and feels invested in my wellbeing into the future. I'm so appreciative of the referral as the consultations eliminated months of added stress and anxieties, therefore I do not hesitate to recommend Professor Chan.” S.S.
