Common brow lift techniques include:

• endoscopic brow lift using small incisions hidden within the hairline

• temporal brow lift focusing on the outer part of the eyebrow

• traditional forehead lift using a longer incision concealed within the hairline

• direct brow lift in selected cases where precise brow elevation is required

The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic as a daycase surgery, allowing you to return home on the same day.

During surgery, your consultant will:

1. Make carefully planned incisions, usually hidden within the hairline.

2. Lift and reposition the tissues of the forehead and brow.

3. Adjust underlying muscles if needed to soften deep frown lines.

4. Secure the tissues in their new position.

5. Close the incisions using stitches or clips.

The length of surgery varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether it’s combined with other treatments, such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Many patients choose to combine a brow lift with blepharoplasty to achieve a more balanced rejuvenation of the upper face.

A forehead and brow lift is generally a safe procedure when performed by an experienced specialist. However, as with any kind of surgery, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of.

Common temporary side effects include:

• swelling around the forehead and eyes

• bruising

• mild discomfort or tightness

• temporary numbness or altered sensation in the forehead or scalp

• temporary headaches

• discuss expected outcomes and recovery

• explain the risks and benefits of surgery

You may be advised to:

• stop smoking several weeks before surgery

• avoid certain medications that increase bleeding risk

• arrange for someone to take you home after the procedure

• arrange support at home for the first few days if needed

As the procedure is typically performed under general anaesthetic, you’ll also receive fasting instructions before surgery.

Recovery varies from person to person, but most patients recover well following a forehead and brow lift.

Immediately after the procedure

Following surgery:

• you may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the forehead and eyes

• a light dressing or bandage may be applied initially

• you’ll be encouraged to rest and keep your head elevated to help reduce swelling

As you’ll have received a general anaesthetic, you should arrange for a friend or family member to accompany you home.

First 1 to 2 weeks

Swelling and bruising are usually most noticeable during the first week and will gradually improve.

During this period, you may be advised to avoid:

• strenuous exercise

• heavy lifting

• bending forward

• activities that increase blood pressure

If stitches or clips are used, they are typically removed within 7 to 14 days.

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the nature of their role and the extent of surgery.

Ongoing recovery

As healing continues:

• mild swelling may persist for several weeks

• sensation in the forehead and scalp gradually returns

• scars continue to soften and fade

• final results become more noticeable as tissues settle

Scars are typically concealed within the hairline or natural contours of the forehead.
