Minimally Invasive ENT Treatments Using CELON Technology

CELON technology offers a modern way to treat common nose and throat problems. Treatments use controlled radiofrequency energy to gently reduce or reshape tissue, reducing symptoms like snoring, nasal blockage, and breathing difficulties.

What is CELON technology, and what is it used for?

CELON technology is a type of treatment known as bipolar radiofrequency-induced thermotherapy. It uses carefully controlled energy to reduce or tighten soft tissue inside the nose or throat.

It can be used to treat symptoms caused by enlarged or obstructive tissue, such as:

  • persistent nasal blockage

  • snoring or disturbed sleep

  • mouth breathing

  • mild obstructive sleep apnoea

  • enlarged turbinates (structures inside the nose)

  • enlarged tonsils or tongue base

Common procedures include:

  • reduction of enlarged nasal turbinates to improve airflow

  • stiffening of the soft palate to reduce snoring

  • shortening of the uvula or excess tissue in the throat

  • reduction of the tongue base to open the airway

  • treatment of enlarged tonsils (partial removal or reduction)

The treatment works by delivering energy directly into the targeted tissue. This creates a controlled reaction that leads to shrinkage or stiffening over time, helping to open the airway and improve breathing.

Unlike traditional surgery options, CELON treatments are designed to preserve the surface lining of tissues, which supports natural healing and reduces discomfort.

At Welbeck, our ENT specialists use this advanced approach to deliver precise, safe, and effective treatment. Most procedures are quick, comfortable, and performed as a day-case, meaning you can return home the same day.

More information

Depending on the issue being treated, CELON procedures are performed by either a laryngologist (throat specialist) or a rhinologist (nose specialist) in an outpatient setting.

Most treatments are done under local anaesthetic in our dedicated Ear, Nose & Throat centre. For children under the age of 13, the procedure will take place under general anaesthetic in our state-of-the-art Surgery Centre.

Most procedures take around 30 minutes, and most patients can return home shortly after treatment, with little disruption to their day.

The treatment follows a straightforward process:

  1. A local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area.

  2. A fine probe is inserted into the targeted tissue.

  3. Controlled radiofrequency energy is delivered through the probe.

  4. The tissue is gently heated, causing it to shrink or stiffen over time.

  5. The probe is removed, and the procedure is complete.

The system uses impedance monitoring, which means it adjusts the energy automatically based on the tissue response, helping ensure precise and safe treatment.

Before offering CELON treatment, your ENT consultant will perform a structured assessment during a consultation to confirm the cause of your symptoms and determine whether CELON is appropriate.

At your appointment, your consultant will:

  • review your symptoms and medical history

  • assess your airway and nasal passages

  • discuss the most appropriate treatment plan with you

If CELON is recommended, preparation for treatment is usually simple.

In most cases:

  • no fasting is required for local anaesthetic procedures

  • you can take most regular medications, unless advised otherwise

  • you should arrange transport home if you feel uncomfortable after the procedure

If a general anaesthetic is required, your consultant will provide specific instructions.

One of the main benefits of CELON treatment is the short recovery time. Most patients return to normal activities quickly.

Immediately after the procedure, you may notice:

  • mild discomfort or soreness

  • slight swelling or congestion

  • a feeling of pressure in the treated area

These symptoms are usually mild and settle within a few days. Most patients resume normal activities within 1 to 2 days, while tissue changes continue over several weeks. Because the surface tissue is preserved, healing tends to be quicker and more comfortable than traditional surgery. Full results are often seen within 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the treatment area.

Your consultant may provide the following aftercare advice:

  • take simple pain relief such as paracetamol

  • avoid strenuous activity for a short period

  • keep the nose or throat hydrated

  • attend a follow-up appointment to review progress

CELON treatments are considered safe and minimally invasive. However, as with any procedure, there are some potential risks, which are typically mild and temporary. Your consultant will explain all risks clearly before your procedure and answer any questions you have.

Potential risks include:

  • mild pain or discomfort

  • temporary swelling or congestion

  • minor bleeding

  • temporary changes in sensation

  • infection (rare)

  • scarring or tissue response (uncommon)

  • need for repeat treatment in some cases

The system’s controlled energy delivery and automatic stop function help reduce the risk of complications.

Frequently asked questions

Some patients notice improvement within a few days, but most changes develop gradually over several weeks. This is because the treated tissue shrinks and remodels over time.

Most patients report little to no pain during the procedure. You may feel mild discomfort afterwards, but this is usually manageable with simple pain relief.

Yes, in some cases, your consultant may recommend a repeat treatment if symptoms persist or return. This depends on your condition and how your body responds to the treatment.

CELON treatment is suitable for many adults and some younger patients with ENT conditions such as nasal obstruction or snoring. Your consultant will assess your symptoms and overall health to decide if it’s right for you.
