Perovial Injection Treatment for Peyronie’s Disease
Perovial injections are a new licensed injectable treatment for men with acute Peyronie’s disease. The treatment is designed to help reduce penile pain, improve curvature, and slow the progression of scar tissue formation during the early stage of the condition.
What are Perovial injections for Peyronie’s disease?
Perovial is the first licensed injectable treatment developed specifically for men with acute Peyronie’s disease. Peyronie’s disease is a condition where scar tissue, known as plaque, develops inside the penis, causing pain, curvature, shortening, or difficulty with erections.
The condition often develops in 2 stages. The first is the acute phase, where inflammation and pain are common, and the curvature may continue to worsen over time. This stage usually lasts between 6 and 18 months. The second stage is the stable or chronic phase, where the plaque and curvature stop changing.
Perovial injections are used during the acute phase of Peyronie’s disease. The treatment contains hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body that helps support tissue healing and reduce inflammation. Injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the penile plaque may help reduce inflammation, soften scar tissue, and improve symptoms before the disease becomes stable.
As one of the newest treatments available for acute Peyronie’s disease, our consultant urologists are among the early adopters and the highest number of surgeons to perform this latest treatment approach, offering access to advanced, evidence-based care in our state-of-the-art Urology centre.
More information
Before starting treatment, you’ll have a consultation with one of our consultant urologists. They will carefully assess your symptoms, medical history, and concerns, and will usually perform a physical examination to determine whether Perovial injections are the most appropriate treatment option for you.
In some cases, an ultrasound scan of your penis may also be done to assess the plaque and curvature in more detail.
Perovial injections are performed as an outpatient treatment, meaning you can return home shortly afterwards. The procedure itself is relatively quick and usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes.
During the treatment:
A local anaesthetic cream or injection may be used to numb the area.
Your consultant will identify the area of plaque within the penis.
Perovial is carefully injected directly into the plaque tissue.
Gentle pressure may be applied afterwards to reduce bruising or swelling.
Most treatment plans involve a course of injections over several weeks. Your consultant will explain how many sessions are likely to be needed based on your symptoms and the severity of your condition.
Most patients tolerate the procedure very well, with only mild temporary discomfort during the injection itself.
Perovial injections are generally considered to be safe and well-tolerated. As with any injection-based treatment, there are some potential risks and side effects, although serious complications are uncommon.
Possible risks and side effects include:
mild pain or discomfort at the injection site
temporary swelling or bruising
redness or tenderness
minor bleeding
temporary worsening of sensitivity
Infection (very rare)
Your consultant will explain all possible risks before treatment and answer any questions you may have. At Welbeck, all procedures are carried out by experienced urology specialists using strict sterile techniques to minimise the risk of complications and infection.
There’s usually very little preparation needed before having a Perovial injection.
Before your appointment, your consultant may advise you to:
continue taking your regular medications unless told otherwise
avoid blood-thinning medication
avoid applying creams or lotions to the treatment area on the day of the procedure
wear comfortable clothing to your appointment
You can usually eat and drink as normal before your treatment, as a general anaesthetic is not required.
Most patients recover quickly after treatment and can return to normal daily activities on the same day.
You may notice mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness for a short period afterwards. This usually settles within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol, can help if needed.
Your consultant may recommend that you:
avoid sexual activity for a short period after each injection
avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
monitor the area for signs of infection, such as increasing redness or swelling
attend follow-up appointments to assess your response to treatment
Because Peyronie’s disease can affect both your physical and emotional wellbeing, ongoing follow-up is an important part of your treatment. Our consultants provide personalised support throughout your care and will discuss whether any additional therapies, such as traction therapy or further treatment options, may help improve your outcome.
As Perovial is a relatively new treatment, Welbeck remains at the forefront of monitoring the latest evidence and treatment protocols to ensure patients receive the highest standard of care available.
