Testicular ultrasound
A testicular ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging scan used to assess the testicles and surrounding structures and diagnose conditions affecting the testicles.
What is a testicular ultrasound?
A testicular ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to assess the testicles and surrounding structures. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images, helping your consultant to diagnose various conditions affecting the testicles.
This painless and radiation-free test is used in the assessment and evaluation of lumps, pain, swelling, or fertility issues.
Common conditions a testicular ultrasound can help detect include:
testicular cancer
cysts and fluid-filled sacs
testicular torsion (twisting of the spermatic cord)
infections such as epididymitis or orchitis
varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum)
hydroceles (fluid buildup around the testicle)
At Welbeck, a testicular ultrasound is carried out by one of our experienced consultant radiologists in our dedicated Men’s Health Clinic.
More information
To begin the scan, your consultant will ask you to get undressed from the waist down and then lie on your back on a medical bed. They will then place a towel or supportive material under your scrotum to keep it still.
A warm, water-based gel is then applied to the scrotum before your consultant begins the scan by moving a handheld probe over the area to capture detailed images.
The scan takes just a few minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterwards. Your consultant may share what they see during the scan with final results and discussion at a follow-up consultation.
A testicular ultrasound is the primary imaging method used to detect testicular cancer. If you or your consultant has found a lump, the ultrasound helps determine:
whether the lump is solid (which may indicate cancer) or fluid-filled (which is likely to be a benign cyst)
the size and location of any abnormalities
whether cancer has spread to nearby tissues
If cancer is suspected, further tests such as blood tests and a biopsy may be required.
Epididymal cyst on ultrasound
Epididymal cysts, or spermatoceles, are fluid-filled sacs that form near the testicle. While they are usually benign, they can cause discomfort or concern. An ultrasound helps differentiate cysts from other testicular abnormalities and ensures they are not solid masses that may require further investigation.
A testicular ultrasound is incredibly safe. The sound waves are harmless, and there are no risks or side effects associated with the procedure.
A testicular ultrasound is a very straightforward test, with no special preparation needed.
After your testicular ultrasound, you’ll be able to go about your daily activities as normal.
Your consultant will review the images and talk through your results and any treatment plans during a follow-up appointment.
