Professor Amanda Varnava is a Consultant Cardiologist at Welbeck’s Heart Health centre in London, specialising in inherited heart conditions and sports cardiology. She has particular expertise in diagnosing and managing cardiomyopathies, inherited heart rhythm disorders (channelopathies) such as long QT and Brugada syndrome, and conditions affecting the aorta, including Marfan syndrome. She also assesses athletes for heart conditions and helps distinguish normal changes associated with exercise (athlete’s heart) from underlying cardiac disease.

Her wider practice includes heart failure, atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm problems, including ventricular ectopics, as well as coronary artery disease, angina, high blood pressure and heart disease in women, including during pregnancy.

She offers a comprehensive range of cardiac investigations, including ECG, ambulatory ECG monitoring using devices such as a portable Holter monitor, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography, cardiac stress testing and coronary angiography. Her services also include CaRi heart analysis, heart health screening and coronary artery disease prevention.

Professor Varnava has an international reputation in inherited cardiac conditions and leads the Inherited Cardiac Disease Centre at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where she is also an honorary senior lecturer. She undertakes an active research programme, regularly lectures at international meetings and has published extensively in medical journals.

Frequently asked questions

Sports cardiology focuses on heart health in people who exercise regularly or participate in sport, from recreational athletes to elite professionals. A sports cardiologist can assess symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations or fainting during exercise, investigate possible underlying heart conditions and help distinguish normal changes associated with athletic training (known as athlete’s heart) from heart disease.

Professor Varnava has extensive experience in this field, acting as an expert advisor to the Football Association and providing cardiac services to professional sports teams, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Stoke City, Watford and Fulham.

An assessment for an inherited heart condition is particularly important if you have a family history of heart disease, heart attack or sudden death, particularly at a young age. Assessment may also be recommended for symptoms such as palpitations, fainting or unexplained chest pain.

Professor Varnava leads the Inherited Cardiac Disease Centre at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and has extensive experience in diagnosing and managing these conditions. She will recommend appropriate investigations based on your symptoms and medical and family history.

Chest pain can feel sharp or dull and may be accompanied by other symptoms, depending on the cause. Although most chest pain isn't a sign of anything serious, it can sometimes indicate an underlying heart condition, so it's important to have it assessed.

At Welbeck, Professor Varnava has access to a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests, including CT coronary angiography, invasive coronary angiography, exercise tolerance testing, stress echocardiography and CaRi-Heart analysis. She will recommend the most appropriate investigations based on your symptoms, medical history and clinical findings, working with other specialists, including respiratory consultants, where needed.

Yes. Professor Varnava has experience in assessing and managing heart conditions in women, including during pregnancy. She can provide specialist advice for women with existing heart conditions or those who develop cardiac symptoms while pregnant. Where appropriate, she can work alongside an obstetric team to help ensure coordinated care.
