What is remote heart rhythm monitoring?

Our remote heart rhythm monitoring service uses an at-home, wearable ECG monitor to check and record your heart’s electrical activity while you go about your daily life.

It’s usually worn for 1 to 2 days, but can be worn for up to 2 weeks, continuously recording your heartbeat. Once monitoring is complete,  a report is created and shared with your consultant, who will review the results and develop a treatment plan if needed.

You may need to have remote heart rhythm monitoring if you have:

  • symptoms of an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), such as palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain or discomfort

  • fainting episodes with no known cause

  • a heart condition that increases the risk of irregular heartbeats

How the service works

Our remote heart rhythm monitoring service is incredibly straightforward, and our Heart Health team are available to provide support whenever you need it. The service follows these steps:

  1. Request a monitor – Complete our online form to order your ECG home monitor. There is no need to attend a consultation with a cardiologist, unless you would like to.

  2. We’ll be in touch – Our Welbeck Heart Health team will contact you to register your details, take payment, explain the process and confirm your delivery address.

  3. Special delivery – Your monitor will be sent to you by secure, tracked post.

  4. Fit and record – Follow the enclosed instructions and simple video guide to fit the monitor. Telephone support is available if you need help.

  5. Return the monitor to us – Once your monitoring period has ended, remove the monitor and return it to us using the prepaid, tracked envelope provided.

  6. Expert analysis – Your results will be analysed within 24 hours, and a Welbeck consultant cardiologist will generate a report which they will share with you via secure email or post.

  7. Follow-up consultation – If your results suggest you would benefit from speaking to a consultant cardiologist, we’ll contact you to arrange an appointment.

More information

Remote heart rhythm monitoring is incredibly straightforward and will be explained to you in full at your consultation.

The monitor is painless to use and is usually worn for 1 to 2 days, continuously recording your heartbeat.

To use the device, you must attach small, sticky electrodes to the middle of your chest. The wires from the electrodes to the recording device can be easily hidden under clothing, and the device is worn on a belt or can be attached to a strap.

Watch this helpful video for a step-by-step guide on how to use the monitor:

The monitor must be worn during the entire recording period, even while sleeping. Water can damage the monitor, so you must not swim, shower or bathe while wearing it.

You can do most other daily activities while wearing the monitor, unless your consultant instructs you otherwise. Your consultant may give you a form to record your activities and any symptoms you experience, as well as the exact times of these events.

It's especially important to make a note of the following symptoms:

  • pounding, fluttering or skipped heartbeats

  • shortness of breath

  • chest pain

Remote heart health monitoring is a straightforward, safe, and non-invasive test.

Some patients may experience mild skin irritation and discomfort from the electrode pads, but there are no other potential side effects or complications.

There’s very little preparation required. However, as the device cannot get wet, we recommend bathing thoroughly before you start using the monitoring system. As the electrodes must be stuck to your chest, you may also need to shave the area.

There is no recovery period or aftercare needed. Once the monitoring period is complete, simply return the device to us for result analysis.

This service is not covered by insurers. The price for using the remote heart rhythm monitoring is as follows:

  • 24 hours - £450

  • 48 hours - £790

  • 72 hours - £960

  • 7 to 14 days - £960

If you’re unsure how long you should wear the monitor, please book a consultation with one of our cardiologists.
