Dr Christos Tziotzios MA, MB BChir (Cantab), PhD, FHEA, FRCP, is currently based at St. John's Institute of Dermatology, within the Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London. He is highly specialised in the treatment of scalp and hair disorders. Dr Tziotzios began his medical education at the University of Cambridge where he graduated with his Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MB BChir).
He then went on to do Academic Foundation Training, before being appointed Academic Clinical Fellow in Dermatology at St John's. During his training he undertook a doctorate research degree, examining the molecular pathogenesis of frontal fibrosing alopecia. His work resulted in many high-profile publications in high-impact journals (including Nature Comms). His contribution was further acknowledged with several prizes including the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) Whimster Prize, the BAD Wycombe Prize, the Royal Society of Medicine Dermatology Research Prize and the NIHR/BAD Award.
He continues to remain active in research. He has been awarded a highly competitive research grant from the Medical Research Council (MRC) the European Academy for Dermatological Research (EADV) and the British Skin Foundation (BSF). Additionally, he is the national Chief Investigator (CI) for the ALLEGRO trials researching novel therapeutics for alopecia areata and has set up the Alopecia+me study, which studies the burden of alopecia. He consistently contributes to medical education by teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is frequently invited Speaker in conferences globally.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, but only for certain services. Some consultations, assessments, and treatments can be booked directly, while others require a GP or specialist referral. Please check the relevant service page for guidance, and contact the centre if you’re unsure.
We aim to offer appointments as quickly as possible, and many services have same-day or next-day availability. Waiting times vary depending on the appointment type, specialty, and consultant availability, but our team will always offer the earliest suitable appointment.
Yes. You can arrange an appointment for a family member, or someone you care for, just let us know when you get in touch. We’ll need their details and consent to complete the booking, unless you're their legal guardian or have power of attorney.
Your first consultation includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors, followed by a thorough examination. It’s helpful if you can bring the results of any previous investigations with you, as well as a list of your current medications. Come with a comfortably full bladder so you can provide a urine sample if requested.
Frequently asked questions
Frontal fibrosing alopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes a gradual recession of the hairline, most commonly in post-menopausal women, though it can affect anyone. Dr Tziotzios is a leading researcher in this condition, with his PhD focused on its molecular causes. Treatment aims to halt further hair loss using anti-inflammatory medications and immunomodulators, tailored to each patient's disease activity.
You should seek specialist advice if your hair loss is patchy, rapidly progressing, accompanied by scalp redness or itching, or if over-the-counter treatments have not helped after several months. Dr Tziotzios provides a thorough scalp and hair assessment to determine the underlying cause, which could range from alopecia areata to scarring alopecia. An accurate diagnosis is essential because some forms of hair loss can become permanent without early specialist treatment.
Alopecia areata is treated with a range of therapies depending on the extent and severity of hair loss, including topical immunotherapy, injections, and newer targeted medications. Dr Tziotzios is the Chief Investigator of the ALLEGRO clinical trials studying novel therapeutics for alopecia, giving his patients access to cutting-edge treatment options. He tailors the treatment plan to each patient's pattern and severity of hair loss.
Laser treatment uses focused light energy to stimulate collagen remodelling in scarred skin, improving texture and reducing the depth of acne scars over a series of sessions. Dr Tziotzios also offers microneedling as an alternative or complementary approach for acne scarring. He assesses each patient's skin type and scar pattern to recommend the most effective combination of treatments.
Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm) is a fungal infection that can cause temporary hair loss, but if left untreated it may lead to scarring and permanent bald patches. Dr Tziotzios diagnoses scalp ringworm through clinical examination and, where needed, laboratory testing. Treatment involves a course of oral antifungal medication, and early intervention is important to prevent lasting damage to the hair follicles.
