Microneedling for Acne Scarring
When acne damages the skin, it can leave behind scars, uneven texture, and enlarged pores. Microneedling helps to repair this damage gradually by encouraging the skin to renew itself.

What is microneedling for acne scarring?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation treatment designed to improve the appearance of acne-prone skin and acne scarring.
It uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the surface of your skin. These micro-injuries stimulate your body’s natural healing response, leading to increased production of collagen and elastin, which are important proteins that help keep your skin firm, smooth, and even.
You may benefit from microneedling if you have:
acne scars (including mild to moderate indentations)
uneven skin texture
enlarged pores
persistent acne marks or pigmentation
skin that has not improved with topical treatments alone
At Welbeck’s Dermatology centre, our specialists provide consultant-led microneedling using advanced technology, with treatment plans tailored to your skin type and concerns.

More information
At Welbeck, microneedling treatments are carefully performed and controlled by our experienced dermatologists to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
The full procedure usually takes around 30 minutes, typically following these steps:
Skin cleansing - your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any oil, bacteria, or makeup.
Application of numbing cream - a topical anaesthetic is applied to reduce discomfort and make the procedure more comfortable.
Preparation of the device - a medical-grade microneedling device, such as the M Pen Pro, is prepared for use.
Microneedling treatment - the device is gently passed over the skin to create controlled micro-injuries.
Application of serums - soothing or repairing serums are applied to support healing and enhance results.
Thanks to the numbing cream, most people describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. Your dermatologist will adjust the depth and intensity of the treatment based on your skin type and the severity of your acne scarring.
Because this treatment works with your body’s natural repair process, results develop gradually over time rather than immediately.
Before you can have treatment, you need to have a consultation with one of our dermatologists. During this appointment, your specialist will assess your skin to evaluate the type and severity of your acne and scarring and ensure that microneedling is the most suitable treatment.
If microneedling is recommended, there’s no special preparation required. However, your dermatologist may give you personalised advice depending on your skin and medical history. This helps to ensure the treatment is both safe and effective.
You may be advised to:
avoid active skincare products (such as retinoids or exfoliating acids) for a few days before treatment
avoid sun exposure or tanning before your appointment
attend your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin
inform your consultant about any medications or skin conditions
If you have active acne, infections, or certain skin conditions, your consultant may recommend treating these first before proceeding with microneedling.
One of the key benefits of microneedling is the minimal downtime – most people can return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment.
Straight after your procedure, your skin may look red and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually settles within 24 to 48 hours.
Your Welbeck consultant will support you with clear aftercare advice to help your skin heal and achieve the best results.
Aftercare typically includes:
using gentle skincare products while your skin recovers
applying a calming mask or cooling product immediately after treatment
avoiding makeup for at least 24 hours if advised
protecting your skin from sun exposure using a high-factor sunscreen
avoiding strenuous exercise, heat treatments, or swimming for a few days
You may also be advised to:
keep your skin well hydrated
avoid picking the skin or touching the treated area
follow a tailored skincare routine recommended by your dermatologist
Results develop gradually as your skin produces new collagen. A course of treatments may be recommended for optimal improvement, particularly for acne scarring.
Follow-up appointments may be arranged to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan if needed.
Microneedling is considered a safe and minimally invasive procedure when carried out by a qualified professional.
However, as with any skin treatment, there are some potential side effects. These are usually mild and temporary.
Possible side effects include:
redness and mild swelling after treatment
temporary skin sensitivity or dryness
slight discomfort during or shortly after the procedure
minor pinpoint bleeding during treatment
More serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed in a clinical setting by an experienced dermatologist.
Your consultant will assess your skin beforehand and explain any individual risks to help you make an informed decision.

Frequently asked questions
The number of sessions varies depending on the severity of your acne scarring and your skin type. Many people benefit from a course of 3 to 6 treatments spaced several weeks apart. Your dermatologist will create a personalised plan for you.
You may notice some early improvements in skin texture within a few weeks, but full results take longer. Collagen production continues over several months, so your skin will gradually improve over time.
Microneedling is suitable for a wide range of skin types and tones. However, it may not be appropriate if you have certain active skin conditions, infections, or severe acne. A consultation will help determine if it’s right for you.
Microneedling is mainly used to improve acne scars and skin texture. In some cases, it may also support overall skin health, but active acne may need to be treated first with other therapies before microneedling is recommended.
