About Ibrahim Al Bakir
Dr Ibrahim Al Bakir is a consultant luminal gastroenterologist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. He has specialist expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux, oesophageal motility disorders, IBS and advanced endoscopy. He is the clinical lead for upper GI physiology testing for reflux and oesophageal disorders at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
As a national endoscopy trainer and the secretary-elect of the colorectal section of the British Society of Gastroenterology, he plays a key role in advancing gastroenterological care and education. Dr Al Bakir's research interests centre around bowel cancer surveillance in inflammatory bowel disease, reflecting his commitment to improving patient outcomes. He is a co-author of the latest British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines on the surveillance of inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr Al Bakir's academic journey includes a medical degree from Oxford University in 2008, preceded by a Bachelor's degree (BA) in Physiological Sciences from the same institution in 2005 and a MA in Physiological Sciences in 2006. In 2021, he successfully completed his PhD at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr Al Bakir has presented his work at international conferences, widely published peer reviewed papers and several book chapters. He has been appointed as a specialist committee member for multiple national GI projects, including NICE technology appraisals for novel endoscopic techniques, and NCEPOD National Confidential Enquiry into national patient outcomes following surgery for IBD.
