Consultant ENT Surgeon and Laryngologist
About Shiying Hey
Miss Hey is a fellowship trained Consultant ENT Surgeon and Laryngologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She specialises in voice, airway, and swallowing disorders, with a particular focus on the care of professional voice users.
After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, Miss Hey completed specialist ENT training in the East of Scotland Deanery. She then undertook the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England accredited fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, gaining considerable experience in advanced laryngology. Her subspecialist training was further augmented through travelling fellowships at internationally renowned voice centres, including the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center in Boston and the University Hospital of Rouen in France, where she further developed expertise in the care of professional voice users, neurolaryngology and phonomicrosurgery.
Alongside her clinical work, Miss Hey maintains an active academic and educational profile. She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, delivered more than 100 presentations and received awards for her work both nationally and internationally. She is an elected member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education. She is regularly invited to teach on the faculty of phonosurgery and laryngology courses in the UK and internationally. She also contributes to European training initiatives, serving as head of the written examination for the European Board Examination in Laryngology and as Director of the mentoring programme within the European Laryngological Society.
Miss Hey also hosts The Voice Box, the official podcast of the Union of European Phoniatricians, which reaches a global audience. It includes a dedicated subseries on the care of the artistic voice and performers.
She is known for her approachable and reliable manner with both patients and colleagues. Her commitment to high standards of patient care has been recognised with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust awards in both the “Act with Integrity” and “Put Patients First” categories.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, but only for certain services. Some consultations, assessments, and treatments can be booked directly, while others require a GP or specialist referral. Please check the relevant service page for guidance, and contact the centre if you’re unsure.
We aim to offer appointments as quickly as possible, and many services have same-day or next-day availability. Waiting times vary depending on the appointment type, specialty, and consultant availability, but our team will always offer the earliest suitable appointment.
Yes. You can arrange an appointment for a family member, or someone you care for, just let us know when you get in touch. We’ll need their details and consent to complete the booking, unless you're their legal guardian or have power of attorney.
Your first consultation includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors, followed by a thorough examination. It’s helpful if you can bring the results of any previous investigations with you, as well as a list of your current medications. Come with a comfortably full bladder so you can provide a urine sample if requested.
