About Julian Teare

Professor Julian Teare is a consultant gastroenterologist with over 25 years standing; he is head of endoscopy at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London and his advice is frequently sought by prestigious bodies, including NICE and the Royal College of Physicians.

Over the course of his career, he has held many senior posts at a number of London NHS trusts. As a professor at Imperial College London, he has vast teaching responsibilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students; as well as doctors and allied healthcare professionals within the NHS. Today, he is at the forefront of endoscopic research, developing new interventional therapies for obesity-related type 2 diabetes; as well as new techniques for minimal access surgery.

At Welbeck he is medical director and chairman of the Digestive Health Centre partnership.

“As chairman, I have been part of an inclusive design process throughout the development of Welbeck Health. At every stage, we’ve listened to patient feedback– including taking criticisms of other endoscopy services to optimise our own patient experience. Combining this and drawing on the experience of our renowned team of clinicians, we’ve designed a patient journey that makes having an invasive procedure as calming and easy as possible.”

Professor Teare MD, FRCP, received his undergraduate medical training at The University of London and then took up a senior registrar position in gastroenterology and general medicine in 1993, at St Mary’s, London. Over the last 20 years, he has held many distinguished positions within St Mary’s and Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust including: clinical governance lead for medicine, emergency services lead and service director for gastroenterology/hepatology and chest medicine.

He has a vast range of teaching and assessment responsibilities. He delivers lectures and seminars to both undergraduate and postgraduate students alongside his on-going education of doctors and allied healthcare professionals within the NHS. He currently provides academic and pastoral supervision to several PhD students.
