About Sanjay Purkayastha
Professor Sanjay Purkayastha is a Consultant General Surgeon at Welbeck Digestive Health, specialising in bariatric and upper GI surgery. He is also a senior lecturer at Imperial College London, where he also works as a trauma surgeon, in one of London’s busiest major trauma centres at St Mary’s Hospital.
Professor Purkayastha was one of the first surgeons in the UK to carry out robotic bariatric surgery and is just one of four surgeons at the Imperial Weight Centre: a Tier 3 and Tier 4 service providing weight loss management and surgery for obesity patients from all over the UK. He is also innovating with new personalised digital pathways in private healthcare especially for patients with appendicitis, gallstone disease and obesity related issues.
Professor Sanjay Purkayastha BSc (Hons) MBBS (Hons) MD FRCS (Eng) first qualified in 2000. He trained at Saint Mary’s hospital and medical school, Imperial College London, the London deanery, where he completed his MBBS in 2000, MRCS in 2004 and his MD in 2007. During this period, he was awarded numerous times for excellence in teaching and patient care.
He completed his training at the Royal College of Surgeons England (FRCS Gen Surg), in 2010. During his training he has also spent time at Cook County Hospital, Chicago the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio and the Mayo Clinic in the USA. He was appointed as a consultant surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, in 2011 and as a clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College, London in 2013.
Professor Purkayastha provides all his bariatric data to the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR), as he believes that transparency of results and outcome/volume-based surgery ensures the safest and best results for patients.
