Cricket is a great way to keep active, with benefits for cardiovascular fitness, strength, coordination, and mental wellbeing. Whatever level you play at, it also provides a valuable sense of community and friendly competition.
However, cricket places varied demands on the body. Bowling, batting, throwing, sprinting, and spending long periods in the field can all lead to injury. The risk may be higher if you don’t prepare properly, increase your workload too quickly, or don’t give your body enough time to recover between sessions.
What are the most common cricket injuries?
Cricket injuries range from sudden impact injuries, such as a fractured finger, to overuse problems that develop gradually, like rotator cuff injuries. A player’s role can also influence the type of injury they’re most likely to experience: fast bowlers may be more vulnerable to shoulder, side and back injuries, for example, while batters and fielders face a greater risk of injury from being struck by the ball.
Finger and hand fractures
Finger and hand fractures occur when one or more of the small bones in the hand or fingers break. In cricket, these injuries are usually caused by direct impact from the ball while batting, catching, or fielding. Wicketkeepers and close fielders may be particularly vulnerable because of the speed of the ball and their fast reaction times.
Symptoms can include:
immediate pain and tenderness
swelling and bruising
difficulty moving the finger or gripping
a finger that looks bent or out of position
numbness or tingling in some cases
Rotator cuff injuries
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surrounds the shoulder joint, helping to keep it stable and control arm movement. Repeated high-speed bowling and throwing can overload these tissues, making rotator cuff injuries particularly relevant to pace bowlers.
The injury may involve irritation, strain, or a tear. It can develop gradually through repetitive use or occur suddenly during a forceful movement.
Symptoms can include:
pain at the front or side of the shoulder
pain when raising or rotating the arm
discomfort when bowling, throwing, or reaching overhead
weakness in the shoulder or arm
pain when lying on the affected side
clicking or catching sensations
Thrower’s elbow
Thrower’s elbow is commonly associated with medial epicondylitis, also known as golfer’s elbow. It affects the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the bony prominence on the inside of the elbow.
Repeated throwing, bowling, and gripping can place excessive strain on these tendons. Poor technique, fatigue, and a sudden increase in throwing volume may all contribute.
Symptoms can include:
pain or tenderness on the inside of the elbow
pain when throwing, gripping, or bending the wrist
stiffness in the elbow
weakness in the hand or wrist
discomfort extending into the forearm
Hamstring strain
The hamstrings are the muscles running down the back of the thigh. A hamstring strain occurs when one or more of these muscles is overstretched or torn.
In cricket, strains often happen during sudden acceleration, sprinting between the wickets, chasing a ball, or making an explosive movement after standing still for an extended period. Fatigue, inadequate preparation, and returning to play too quickly after a previous strain can increase the risk.
Symptoms can include:
sudden pain at the back of the thigh
tenderness and swelling
bruising
weakness in the affected leg
pain when walking, running or bending the knee
a snapping or popping sensation in more significant injuries
Sprained ankle
An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments supporting the ankle are overstretched or torn. It commonly happens when the foot rolls inwards during running, landing, or a rapid change of direction.
Cricketers may also sprain an ankle by stepping on the ball, landing awkwardly near the boundary, or running on an uneven outfield.
Symptoms can include:
Side/intercostal strain
A side strain affects the muscles along the side of the trunk (body), often involving the internal oblique muscles or the intercostal muscles between the ribs. It’s strongly associated with fast bowling because the bowling action combines forceful rotation, side-bending, and extension of the torso.
The injury may occur suddenly during a delivery or develop as the muscles become overloaded by repeated bowling. A rapid increase in bowling workload can raise the risk.
Symptoms can include:
sharp pain along the side of the chest or abdomen
pain when bowling, twisting or bending sideways
discomfort when taking a deep breath, coughing or sneezing
tenderness over the affected area
muscle tightness or spasm
Back injuries
Back pain is common among cricketers, particularly fast bowlers. Bowling repeatedly places considerable rotational, bending, and impact forces through the lower back. Depending on the tissues involved, injuries can affect the muscles, joints, discs, or bones of the spine.
Young fast bowlers may be particularly vulnerable to bone stress injuries, including stress reactions and stress fractures in part of a vertebra. Back problems may also occur in batters and fielders because of prolonged crouching, sudden twisting, or diving.
Symptoms can include:
pain or stiffness in the lower back
pain that becomes worse during or after bowling
discomfort when arching, rotating, or bending the spine
muscle spasms
reduced movement
pain spreading into the buttock or leg
numbness, tingling, or weakness if a nerve is affected
Concussion
Concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or by an impact to the body that makes the brain move rapidly inside the skull. In cricket, it may result from being struck by the ball, colliding with another player, or hitting the ground while diving or attempting a catch.
Symptoms are not always immediate, and a player does not have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. A suspected concussion should always be taken seriously – the player should stop playing and be medically assessed.
Symptoms can include:
headache
dizziness or problems with balance
confusion or disorientation
blurred or double vision
nausea or vomiting
sensitivity to light or noise
difficulty concentrating or remembering
unusual tiredness
irritability or changes in mood
loss of consciousness in some cases
How to avoid cricket injuries
Not every cricket injury can be prevented, but good preparation, sensible workload management, and appropriate equipment can reduce the risk.
warm up well – include light aerobic activity, dynamic mobility exercises, and movements specific to batting, bowling, throwing, and fielding
increase your workload gradually – avoid sudden jumps in the number of overs bowled, balls thrown, or matches played, particularly at the start of the season or after a break
build sport-specific strength – regularly train the shoulders, forearms, core, back, hips, and legs to help your body cope with the demands of cricket
work on your technique – coaching can help identify inefficient bowling, throwing, or batting movements that may place unnecessary stress on the body
use suitable protective equipment – wear a well-fitting helmet, gloves, pads, and other protection appropriate to your position. Footwear should provide suitable grip and support for the playing surface
allow time for recovery – build rest days into your schedule, get enough sleep, and avoid repeatedly training or playing through fatigue
respond to pain early – persistent or recurring pain can be a sign that a tissue is becoming overloaded. Reducing activity and seeking professional advice early may help stop a minor problem from becoming more serious
