Frequently asked questions

Many biological and environmental factors can cause male infertility, including:

  • sperm problems – malformed sperm, low sperm count (oligospermia) and the absence of sperm in your semen (azoospermia)

  • genetic disorders – Klinefelter syndrome and myotonic dystrophy

  • certain medical conditions – diabetes, some autoimmune diseases, and cystic fibrosis

  • infections – epididymitis, orchitis, and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

  • varicoceles (swollen veins in the testicles)

  • cancer treatments – chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgical removal of your testicles

  • testicular trauma

  • hormonal disorders that affect the hypothalamus or pituitary glands

  • surgery to the groin, including previous undescended testes

Testosterone levels can be checked with a simple blood test. We recommend having your levels assessed if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • low sex drive

  • trouble conceiving

  • erectile dysfunction

  • persistent fatigue

  • reduced muscle mass
