More information

Our implant health assessment and screening consists of a breast ultrasound scan and an enhanced breast screening (3D mammogram), both of which are performed by one of our experienced consultant radiologists.

At Welbeck, we have enhanced the way we screen women who have breast implants. Our mammograms provide a cross-sectional view of the breast tissue, and we use a method called the Eklund Technique to assess more than 90% of your breast tissue. This allows for better visualisation of the natural breast tissue.

It’s crucial to be aware that it’s often not possible to screen 100% of the breast, but the more experienced the mammographer is, the better the chance of getting an accurate and representative image.

Our experienced mammographers know exactly how to position your breast and implant to achieve the most accurate image of the breast tissue. Every part of the breast, even the back, is very important to capture in the screening.

Offering ultrasound in addition to enhanced mammography, we’re able to effectively assess not only your breast tissue, but also the capsule of the implant and axilla to check for any changes and abnormalities.

Cancer can occur anywhere within the breast tissues and may be missed if the proper imaging techniques are not applied. Lumps and lesions in particular areas can go undetected, so it’s important to have your screenings with experienced radiologists like ours, as they can appropriately scan the entire breast.

We understand that many women who have implants fear getting their breasts screened, as there are lots of misconceptions surrounding it. But the earlier any problem is detected, the better, so assessment and screening are vital – and having implants shouldn’t stop you.

Implants consist of cohesive silicone, which is not prone to rupturing under compression; therefore, it cannot be an additional risk to the screening.

When performing your screening, we take into consideration the following factors: your age, where your implant is located, and where it’s placed (on top of or below the pectoral or chest wall muscle).

There’s no specific preparation needed; however, you may wish to wear clothing that’s easy to remove for the examination.

There’s no recovery time or aftercare needed with screening. Some women experience a little discomfort or pain during a mammogram, but this stops immediately after.

    Frequently asked questions

No, not at all. Your individual risk of developing breast cancer is determined by several factors, but having breast implants does not increase your likelihood of developing breast cancer. It’s also important to understand that having breast implants does not reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.

The advice remains the same, so no. The NHS screening programme offers mammograms from 50 to 74 years at 3-year intervals.

At Welbeck, we recommend having a private screening “in the middle”, at 18-month intervals. This is to ensure that potential abnormalities are identified and treated as soon as possible.

Our mammographers are experienced in providing screenings for women with implants. They will advise which type of imaging you need based on your individual case.

No, it’s a common misconception that having a mammogram will damage or rupture breast implants. As well as implants being very robust, our mammographers are experienced in placing the breast correctly for mammograms, so there is no additional risk of rupture or damage.
