Private Neck Lift

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the neck and jawline by tightening loose skin, repositioning underlying muscles, and removing excess fat where needed. It can help restore a smoother, firmer neck contour while maintaining a natural-looking result.

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift, also known as platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty, is a surgical procedure that addresses visible signs of ageing affecting the neck and jawline.

As we get older, our skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity. The muscles beneath the skin can also weaken, while gravity, weight changes, genetics, and sun exposure all contribute to changes in the neck. These changes may lead to loose skin, excess fat beneath the chin, or vertical muscle bands becoming more noticeable.

A neck lift improves these concerns by:

  • removing excess skin

  • tightening the platysma muscles in the neck

  • reducing excess fat beneath the chin where appropriate

  • creating a smoother transition between the jawline and neck

  • improving the overall contour and definition of the lower face

Modern neck lift techniques are designed to enhance your natural features rather than dramatically alter your appearance. The aim is to achieve a refreshed, balanced result that complements the rest of your face. A neck lift may be performed on its own or combined with other facial procedures, such as a facelift, depending on your goals and your surgeon's assessment.

At Welbeck, our experienced surgeons provide personalised neck lift surgery using modern techniques that are tailored to your individual anatomy and aesthetic goals.

More information

Before surgery, you'll attend a detailed consultation with one of our consultants. During this appointment, they'll discuss your concerns, assess your skin quality and facial anatomy, review your medical history, and explain the most appropriate treatment options.

They'll also explain the expected outcome, possible limitations, and any risks associated with surgery so you can make an informed decision.

Neck lift surgery is usually carried out as a day-case procedure, meaning you can normally return home on the same day.

Although every operation is tailored to the individual, the procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. You'll receive either a general anaesthetic or, in selected cases, sedation with local anaesthetic, depending on the extent of surgery and your consultant's recommendation.

  2. Your surgeon makes carefully planned incisions, usually around the ears and, in some cases, beneath the chin. These are positioned to keep scars as discreet as possible.

  3. The underlying neck muscles are tightened to improve definition and reduce visible muscle banding.

  4. Excess fat beneath the chin or along the jawline may be removed or repositioned where appropriate.

  5. Loose skin is gently repositioned before any excess skin is removed.

  6. The incisions are closed using fine sutures, and dressings are applied to support healing.

The exact length of surgery varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether it's combined with another facial operation.

A neck lift may be suitable if you're unhappy with age-related changes affecting your neck or jawline and would like a longer-lasting improvement than non-surgical treatments can provide.

You may benefit from a neck lift if you have:

  • loose or sagging skin beneath your chin

  • a loss of definition between your chin and neck

  • visible vertical neck bands

  • excess fat beneath the chin creating the appearance of a double chin

  • loose skin following significant weight loss

  • a neck that appears older than the rest of your face

The procedure is suitable for both men and women and is most commonly performed in people aged 40 years and over, although suitability depends on your overall health, skin quality, and personal goals rather than your age alone.

Good candidates are generally people who:

  • are in good physical health

  • do not smoke, or are willing to stop smoking before and after surgery

  • have realistic expectations about the results

  • understand that while surgery can produce long-lasting improvements, it cannot stop the natural ageing process

A neck lift is considered a safe procedure when performed by an experienced specialist. As with all surgery, however, there are some risks.

Most people experience temporary side effects during the normal healing process, including:

  • swelling

  • bruising

  • mild discomfort

  • tightness in the neck

  • temporary numbness or altered sensation

These usually improve steadily during the first few weeks after surgery.

Less common complications include:

  • infection

  • bleeding or haematoma (a collection of blood beneath the skin)

  • delayed wound healing

  • noticeable scarring

  • skin irregularities or asymmetry

  • temporary nerve irritation affecting sensation or movement

  • permanent nerve injury, although this is rare

Your consultant will discuss these risks in detail during your consultation, together with the steps taken before, during, and after surgery to minimise the chance of complications.

Preparation begins with your consultation, where your surgeon will review your medical history, any medications you take, previous operations, allergies, and lifestyle factors that may affect surgery or recovery.

Before your procedure, your consultant may advise you to:

  • stop smoking several weeks before surgery to improve healing

  • avoid certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, if medically appropriate

  • arrange for a family member or friend to take you home after surgery and stay with you during your first night

  • prepare your home so you can rest comfortably during the first few days of recovery

  • follow any fasting instructions if you're having a general anaesthetic

You'll receive detailed instructions before your procedure, including when to arrive, what to bring, and what to expect on the day of surgery.

Your consultant and clinical team will support you throughout your recovery and provide detailed aftercare instructions before you leave Welbeck.

Immediately after surgery, dressings may be applied to protect the surgical site and help reduce swelling. It's normal to experience some bruising, swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort during the first few days. Any pain can usually be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief, as advised by your consultant.

During the first 1 to 2 weeks, it's important to rest and allow your body to heal. While gentle walking is encouraged, you should avoid strenuous activity, bending, heavy lifting, and anything that significantly raises your blood pressure.

Most patients can expect the following recovery timeline:

  • 1 to 4 days – swelling, bruising, and tightness are at their greatest

  • 5 to 10 days – stitches are usually removed, depending on the type used

  • 10 to 14 days – many people feel comfortable returning to light daily activities or office-based work

  • 3 to 4 weeks – most swelling has improved, and you can usually resume more strenuous exercise if your consultant agrees

  • several weeks to a few months – residual swelling continues to settle, and your final results gradually become more visible

To support healing, your consultant may recommend that you:

  • keep your head elevated when sleeping during the first few nights

  • avoid smoking, as it can slow healing and increase the risk of complications

  • protect your scars from direct sunlight by covering them or using high-factor sunscreen once the wounds have healed

  • attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so your recovery can be monitored

Most scars become less noticeable over time and are usually positioned in natural skin creases or around the ears to help keep them as discreet as possible.

Your consultant will let you know when it's safe to return to driving, work, exercise, and other normal activities based on your individual recovery.

Frequently asked questions

A neck lift can provide long-lasting improvement to the appearance of your neck and jawline. While the procedure cannot stop the natural ageing process, many people continue to enjoy their results for 10 years or longer. Maintaining a stable weight, protecting your skin from sun damage, and avoiding smoking can help preserve your results.

It can, depending on what's causing it. If excess fat beneath the chin is contributing to the appearance of a double chin, your surgeon may remove or reshape this fat during the procedure. If fullness is mainly caused by skin laxity or muscle changes, tightening these tissues may also improve the contour of your neck.

All surgery leaves scars, but your surgeon will make incisions carefully to make them as discreet as possible. They're usually hidden around the ears and, if required, beneath the chin. Most scars fade gradually over the months following surgery.

Yes. Many patients choose to combine a neck lift with procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, brow lift, or facial fat grafting to achieve more balanced facial rejuvenation. Your consultant will discuss whether combining procedures is appropriate for your individual goals and overall health.
