Comprehensive Abdominal Health and Hernia Service

Our comprehensive service is built to support patients with complex hernias or abdominal wall problems. We provide a personalised, evidence-based recommendation and support you in reaching a positive outcome.

What is Welbeck’s comprehensive abdominal health and hernia service?

The lifetime risk of inguinal hernias is 24% men and 3% women. While this condition is relatively common, it often takes many years for patients with complex hernias and abdominal issues to receive the treatment and care they need.

Our comprehensive abdominal health and hernia service has been specifically designed to help patients with complex hernias or abdominal wall problems understand what’s happening, why symptoms are occurring, and what the safest treatment options are. Our goal is to give every patient a personalised, evidence-based recommendation and support them in reaching a positive outcome.

The service provides a combined offering of specialist imaging, expert surgical assessment, and a multidisciplinary review to provide a clear, individualised care plan. Some patients may need to have surgery, while others will benefit from targeted pain treatment or further optimisation before repair.

This service has been built for those who:

  • need expert advice for managing a new hernia

  • have a recurrent or complex hernia, or abdominal weakness

  • have had previous abdominal or mesh repair surgery with recurring pain

  • require clarity on unclear findings on earlier scans

  • want a second opinion before major abdominal surgery

  • are considering abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR)

  • have chronic and intractable groin or abdominal pain before and after hernia repair

  • require weight optimisation before major abdominal wall surgery

More information

At Welbeck, your care is led by world-renowned experts in hernia and abdominal wall health, providing a clear, specialist pathway from diagnosis through to treatment.

Your journey begins with a consultation with one of our specialist surgeons, who will take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, and any previous treatments. We take a holistic approach — assessing not just the hernia itself, but its impact on your pain, function, and day-to-day life.

Where needed, we arrange any required tests — including ultrasound, CT, or MRI — often on the same day and all within the same centre, avoiding unnecessary delays.

Your case is reviewed by our multidisciplinary team (MDT) of leading experts, including specialist hernia surgeons, radiologists, pain specialists, physiotherapists, and other relevant clinicians. Together, they develop a personalised, evidence-based treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

You’ll receive a clear, structured care plan outlining your diagnosis, recommended treatment approach, and alternative options — both surgical and non-surgical — including guidance on pain management, rehabilitation, and recovery. Where surgery is advised, this includes a detailed discussion of all options, including different types of mesh (biologic and synthetic), so you can make a fully informed decision.

At your follow-up appointment, your consultant will talk you through the plan in detail, answer any questions, and agree the next steps with you — including timing, location of care, and how your treatment will be coordinated.

Where tests are completed on the same day, we aim to see you again within 1 week, ensuring a fast, coordinated, and reassuring experience from diagnosis through to treatment.

For your consultation, it’s helpful if you can bring details of any previous surgeries, scans, medications and any relevant medical letters.

For some scans, such as CT scans, you may be required to fast for a short period or come with a full bladder – specific instructions will be provided in advance.

Once your case has been reviewed and you’ve attended your follow-up consultation, you’ll progress with your treatment plan, and follow-up appointments will be arranged as required.

For patients who undergo hernia surgery at Welbeck, most will go home the same day. After surgery, you can return to light activities within days, and gradually resume normal activity over 2 to 4 weeks, following personalised guidance as provided by your consultant.

Are there any risks to consider?

The risks associated with this service are very low.

Any potential risks relate to:

  • imaging (minimal radiation exposure from CT scans, where clinically necessary)

  • discomfort during examination or injections

  • emotional distress when discussing complex or long-standing symptoms

If surgery or interventional treatments are recommended, your consultant will discuss risks with you in detail as part of the consent process before proceeding.

An initial consultation with your specialist consultant, together with formal review by our multidisciplinary team (MDT), is priced at £600.

This does not include any additional imaging or tests that may be required. We accept both self-pay and insured patients.

At Welbeck, your care is led by world-class abdominal wall and hernia specialists, supported by a fully integrated network of experts to deliver comprehensive, end-to-end care.

Alongside specialist surgical advice, we provide coordinated access to aligned services including pain management, physiotherapy, and medically supervised weight management — ensuring every aspect of your condition is addressed, not just the hernia itself.

Where needed, your consultant can seamlessly involve colleagues across the Welbeck network, creating a joined-up, multidisciplinary approach to your care. All consultations, diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up take place within our state-of-the-art facilities, enabling fast, accurate assessment and a smooth, well-supported patient experience under one roof.

This plan brings together input from world-leading hernia surgeons alongside radiologists, pain specialists, plastic surgeons, endocrinologists, and physiotherapists. It will clearly set out:

  • your diagnosis and key findings

  • recommended treatment approach, with supporting rationale

  • alternative options (both surgical and non-surgical), including benefits and considerations

  • a structured plan for pain management, prehabilitation, and post-surgery recovery

  • expected timelines, including preparation, treatment, and recovery

Where appropriate, your plan may also include input on optimising weight, fitness, and metabolic health to improve surgical outcomes and long-term results.

Your consultant will guide you through this in detail at your follow-up appointment, ensuring you feel informed, confident, and fully supported in deciding the right approach for you.
