What is HairMetrx scalp and strand analysis?
Hair and scalp problems can develop gradually and may be linked to a range of factors, including hormones, stress, nutrition, genetics, or underlying skin conditions. Without a clear diagnosis, it can be difficult to pinpoint the most effective treatment.
Traditional methods for hair and scalp analysis typically rely on manual assessment, which often involves the clipping, trimming, or cutting of already thinning hair.
The HairMetrx scalp and strand analysis system is a detailed, non-invasive assessment device that examines your scalp condition, hair follicles, and growth patterns, without the need for any hair removal. Employing AI algorithms, the system offers fully automated, real-time analysis to identify the underlying causes of common concerns such as hair loss, thinning, or scalp irritation.
Combining their clinical expertise with advanced HairMetrx imaging, our consultants can make a fast and accurate diagnosis to provide the most appropriate treatment quickly and effectively.
This service is suitable for a wide range of people, including:
individuals experiencing hair loss or hair thinning
people with scalp concerns such as dryness, itching, or irritation
those noticing early changes in hair density or quality
women experiencing postpartum or hormonal hair changes
people considering hair restoration or growth treatments
men in the early stages of male pattern hair loss
anyone unsure about the cause of their hair concerns

More information
HairMetrx is a simple outpatient imaging assessment that can be carried out by a Welbeck dermatologist during an initial consultation. It typically takes around 15 minutes and does not require any anaesthetic or recovery time.
The imaging itself is painless and non-invasive. It involves placing the HairMetrix device against the scalp to capture detailed images of hair follicles and skin. Because the process is quick and straightforward, it’s often used as a first step before starting any hair treatment programme.
An appointment with HairMatrx assessment will usually include:
medical and hair history review – your specialist will ask about your symptoms, lifestyle, general health, and any recent changes that may affect your hair
visual examination – your consultant will take a close look at your scalp and hair to assess density, texture, and overall condition
digital or trichoscopic imaging – the HairMetrix device is moved over the head to produce magnified images of the scalp and hair follicles
classification of hair concern – your clinician will identify patterns of hair loss or scalp issues
personalised recommendation plan – you’ll receive tailored advice on next steps, which may include lifestyle changes, treatments, or further investigations
There’s no specific preparation required before your appointment.
However, to help ensure the most accurate assessment, you may wish to:
arrive with clean, dry hair where possible
avoid heavy styling products on the day of your appointment
make a note of any recent changes in your health, medications, or lifestyle
be ready to discuss your hair concerns and how long you’ve had them
If you’re unsure about anything before your appointment, our team will be happy to guide you.
There’s no recovery time required after a HairMetrx assessment.
You can return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment.
Following your assessment:
your clinician will explain your results and what they mean
you may receive personalised recommendations for treatment or further tests
a follow-up consultation may be suggested if ongoing care is needed
you can decide on the next steps at your own pace
If further care is recommended, Welbeck offers access to a wide range of dermatology and hair health services, allowing your care to continue seamlessly in one place.
HairMetrx is a very safe procedure, as it’s non-invasive and does not involve medication or injections. There are no known medical risks associated with this assessment.
The cost of a HairMetrx scalp and strand analysis is £25. This is in addition to the initial consultation cost, which varies per consultant.
