Frequently asked questions

If an ultrasound scan is needed, your child’s consultant will advise which scan is most appropriate. Wherever possible, especially with our younger patients, we aim to use transabdominal (tummy) ultrasound – a transvaginal (internal) ultrasound will only be performed when absolutely necessary.

In some cases, a gynaecological examination is not needed. If an examination is required, your child’s consultant will explain the process and answer any questions. In cases where a gynaecological exam is required, we will always provide a chaperone, who is another healthcare professional who’s specially trained to be present during appointments and procedures. They’ll act as your child’s advocate and ensure they feel safe and comfortable at all times. Unfortunately, parents cannot act as chaperones – our clinical staff are trained to a high standard to act as your advocate.

Yes, you can safely have a gynaecological ultrasound (transabdominal or transvaginal) at any time during your menstrual cycle. Menstrual bleeding doesn’t affect the accuracy or quality of the scan. In some cases, having the scan during your period can actually be helpful. For example, if your consultant is investigating conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, or fibroids, certain features may be easier to identify when the lining of the womb is naturally thinner. We understand that you might feel less comfortable attending during your period, but please know that this is completely normal. If you’d prefer to rearrange your appointment, just let us know.
